German philosopher
Hans Jonas (10 May 1903 – 5 February 1993) was a German-born American Jewish philosopher, from 1955 to 1976 the Alvin Johnson Professor of Philosophy at the New School for Social Research in New York City.
Hans Jonas (born October 5, 1903) was a German philosopher and environmentalist. He was born in Mönchengladbach, Germany and held German citizenship.
Jonas was educated at prominent institutions including the University of Marburg, Heidelberg University, University of Freiburg, and Humboldt University of Berlin. His doctoral advisor was the influential philosopher Martin Heidegger.
In addition to his work as a philosopher, Jonas was actively involved in environmentalism. He died in New York City on February 5, 1993.
