IQM Quantum Computers is investing more than €40 million to expand its quantum computer production facility in Finland. The move comes shortly after the company’s large Series B round of over $300 million and is aimed at rapidly scaling the development and manufacturing of superconducting quantum systems for high‑performance computing applications.
The enlarged site will span around 8,000 square metres and nearly double both the cleanroom area and the system assembly line capacity. Once fully operational, the facility is expected to produce more than 30 full-stack quantum computers per year, serving demand from supercomputing centres, research institutions, and enterprises in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, finance, and climate science. The expansion also includes a dedicated quantum data centre to support ongoing research, testing, and cloud access.
A significant portion of the €40 million will be directed into new cleanroom equipment and advanced process control to support IQM Quantum Computers’ roadmap toward fault-tolerant quantum computing by around 2030. By tightening control over chip fabrication and quality assurance, the company aims to build large-scale processors capable of error correction, a prerequisite for reliable, commercial‑grade quantum computing. Longer term, the infrastructure is planned to support systems scaling toward millions of qubits.
The project is also designed to strengthen Europe’s quantum supply chain by localising chip development, fabrication, and quality control within the region. This aligns with EU ambitions around technological sovereignty in strategic technologies, reducing reliance on external suppliers and reinforcing Europe’s competitiveness in quantum innovation. The integrated production line, combining chip manufacturing and system assembly, is intended to be one of the most advanced quantum hardware factories in the world.
Sustainability is a core element of the expansion. The upgraded facility will incorporate an abatement system to cut direct emissions from production and will transition fully to renewable district heating, moving toward a carbon‑neutral “quantum factory.” IQM Quantum Computers, founded in 2018 and now employing more than 300 people across Europe, Asia, and the United States, positions this investment as both an industrial and environmental blueprint for the future of quantum computing.
