Igor Shafarevich (birth name: Igor Rostislavovich Shafarevich) was born on June 3, 1923, in Zhytomyr and passed away on February 19, 2017, in Moscow. He was a citizen of both the Soviet Union and Russia. Shafarevich was a mathematician, human rights activist, and professor. He was educated at Moscow State University, Steklov Institute of Mathematics, and MSU Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics.
Shafarevich's doctoral advisor was Boris Delaunay, and among his many doctoral students were Yuri Manin, Suren Arakelov, Igor Dolgachev, Alexey Parshin, Yuri Drozd, Viacheslav V. Nikulin, Evgeny Golod, Alexei Kostrikin, and Boris Moishezon.
He made significant contributions to mathematics through his notable works, including the Tate–Shafarevich group, Grothendieck–Ogg–Shafarevich formula, Shafarevich–Weil theorem, and Shafarevich's theorem on solvable Galois groups. In recognition of his contributions, Shafarevich was awarded the Lenin Prize.
