Indeed is a worldwide job recruitment website and company founded in 2004 by Paul Forster and Rony Kahan. The site operates in over sixty countries and in twenty-eight languages. It is free to use for both employers and job seekers. Employers can pay to have their job postings sponsored to receive more visibility in search results. According to a September 2021 measurement by ComScore, Indeed is the most-visited job posting website in the world, with over 300 million visits every month. Indeed's stated mission is "to help people get jobs." The company has over 14,000 employees. The company has been a subsidiary of Recruit Holdings since September 2012. It is headquartered in Austin, Texas and has over a dozen additional locations around the world, including in New York City, San Francisco, Tokyo, London, Paris, Amsterdam, Sydney, and Zürich.
Indeed was founded in November 2004. In August 2005, the company received $5 million in funding from The New York Times, Allen & Company, and Union Square Ventures. Also in 2005, Indeed introduced its longstanding logo and its pay-per-click business model. Indeed was acquired by Recruit Holdings in September 2012. In May 2022, Indeed announced a $50 million fund called the Indeed Small Business Hiring Fund to assist small businesses with hiring efforts. In March 2023, Indeed laid off about 15 percent of its workforce, or 2,200 employees, citing predictions of a future decline in the labor market.
The company's revenue comes from pay-per-click, pay-per-applicant, and advertising. With the pay-per-click model, companies pay a small fee––ranging from $0.10 to $5––whenever their job postings are viewed. The pay-per-applicant model has companies pay for each job applicant that meets their minimum posted requirements. Costs for this model are based on factors like market conditions and are thus determined at the time of posting. Indeed also allows other companies to advertise on its platform.
