Jan Camenisch received a Diploma in Electrical Engineering in 1993 and a Ph.D. in Computer Science in 1998 both from ETH Zurich. From 1998 until 1999 he was Research Assistant Professor in Computer Science at the University of Aarhus, Denmark. Since 1999 he has been Research Staff Member and project leader at IBM Research — Zurich. He was also the technical leader of the EU-funded projects PRIME and PrimeLife which both contributed towards making on-line privacy a reality.
Jan is a scientist in the area of privacy and cryptography. He has published over 130 widely cited papers, holds about 140 patents, and has received several awards for his work, including the 2010 ACM SIGSAC outstanding innovation award, and the 2013 IEEE computer society technical achievement award, and the 2018 IFIP Kristian Beckman award. Jan is also a co-inventor of Identity Mixer, a cryptographic protocol suite for privacy-preserving authentication and transfer of certified attributes. Jan is a Fellow of IEEE and IACR.
Since June 2021 Jan Camenisch is CTO at the DFINITY Foundation and Director of the DFINITY Zurich Research Lab. He also serves on Sovrin‘s Technical Governance Board. Before joining DFINITY, Jan was a Principal Research Staff Member at IBM Research – Zurich, where he was leading the Privacy & Cryptography research team and was a member of the IBM Academy of Technology.
