Biography

Born July 22 (August 4), 1917 in Odessa in the family of a railway worker.

In 1922, together with his parents, he moved to their homeland in Western Belarus (the village of Zagora (Zagorye) of the Korelichi district of the Grodno region, at that time - Poland). In 1931 he graduated from the Polish seven-year school, entered the gymnasium, but could not study there because of financial difficulties, he was engaged in self-education. Since 1938, he published poetry and journalism in the Vilna Belarusian magazine "Shlyakh Moladzi" ("Way of Youth").

In 1939 he was drafted into the Polish army and served in the marines. In September 1939, near Gdynia, he was captured by the Germans, in the fall of 1941 he fled and returned to his homeland; joined the Soviet partisans. From October 1942, he was a liaison officer of the Zhukov partisan brigade, from March to July 1944, he was a reconnaissance partisan of the Komsomolets brigade, editor of the newspaper Stsyag Svabody (Banner of Freedom, an organ of the Mirsky Underground District Committee of the All-Union Communist Party of Bolsheviks) and a satirical leaflet "Partyzanskaya Zhygala" ("Partisan Sting").From October 1944 he lived in Minsk, worked in the editorial office of the newspaper-poster “Let's crush the fascist bastard” (“Let's crush the fascist bastard”), the magazines “Vozhyk” (“Hedgehog”), “Maladost” (“Youth”), “Polymya” ( "Flame"), in the State Publishing House of the Byelorussian SSR.

Since 1945, a member of the SP of the USSR. In 1966-1971 - Secretary of the Board of the Union of Writers of the Byelorussian SSR. He was twice elected to the Supreme Soviet of the Byelorussian SSR (1963-1967, 1980-1985). Chairman of the Belarusian branch of the society "USSR - Canada" (1967-1990), member of the Belarusian PEN Center since 1989. Honorary member of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (1994).

Janka Bryl passed away on July 25, 2006. Buried in Kolodishchi.
