John G. Thompson

John G. Thompson, also known as John Griggs Thompson, was born on October 13, 1932, in Ottawa, Kansas. He is a United States citizen and a notable mathematician. Thompson's education includes attendance at Ottawa High School(Kansas), Yale University, and the University of Chicago .

His doctoral advisor was Saunders Mac Lane, and throughout his career, he has advised several doctoral students, including Robert Griess, David Benson, Charles Sims (mathematician), Richard Lyons (mathematician), and David M. Goldschmidt.

Among his accomplishments, Thompson received the prestigious Fields Medal in 1970 and the Abel Prize in 2008. Currently, he is located in the United States.
