Julian Schwinger was a mathematician and physicist , born on February 12, 1918, in New York City . He completed his education at Townsend Harris High School , City College of New York , and Columbia University . Schwinger had the United States citizenship and passed away in Los Angeles on July 16, 1994 .
Julian Schwinger is known for his work on quantum electrodynamics , the Schwinger model , the Rarita–Schwinger equation , and the Lippmann–Schwinger equation . He received the 1965 Nobel Prize in Physics .
Throughout his career, Schwinger mentored several doctoral students, including Ben Roy Mottelson , Sheldon Lee Glashow , Walter Wilcox , Sam Edwards (physicist) , and Bryce DeWitt , among many others. He was supervised by Isidor Isaac Rabi during his own doctoral studies .
