Isidor Isaac Rabi (born July 29, 1898, Rymanów) was a physicist known for his work in nuclear magnetic resonance, Rabi cycle, Rabi problem, Rabi resonance method, and the Breit-Rabi formula. He held citizenship in both the United States and Poland.
Rabi was educated at John Jay Educational Campus in Brooklyn, Cornell University, and Columbia University. His primary academic focus was on physics. Albert Potter Wills served as Rabi's doctoral advisor.
Throughout his career, Rabi mentored several doctoral students, including Julian Schwinger, Donald Hamilton, Norman Foster Ramsey Jr., Harold Brown (Secretary of Defense), Martin Lewis Perl, William Nierenberg, Ze’ev Lev, and Lloyd Motz.
He received the prestigious 1944 Nobel Prize in Physics for his contributions to the field. Isidor Isaac Rabi passed away on January 11, 1988, in New York City.
