Khanmigo is a technology solution that leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to help both students and teachers in an educational setting. The pilot program with limited participants was launched in March 2023 by its parent company, Khan Academy.
Khanmigo is powered by GPT-4 technology from OpenAI. It is a form of artificial intelligence that uses language models to produce text that mimics humans. Thus, Khanmigo has features that can be used by teachers and students alike.
Khanmigo can complete administrative tasks for teachers, such as writing lesson plans. Teachers can enter information about the lesson into Khanmigo, such as the topic and the learning objectives for the students. Then, the AI asks questions to gain clarity about what it is the teacher wants, such as whether they want a hands-on activity or a discussion. It can then generate a lesson plan for the educator.
Students can use Khanmigo as a tutor that guides them through learning. For example, it can guide a student through the writing process by asking questions to engage the students with developing the plot and characters. The AI also provides encouragement by reacting to students' responses with phrases such as "That's a great idea!"
Furthermore, Khanmigo can help students with math by guiding them through math problems with prompts and hints without telling them the answer. It is also trained to have interactive experiences with students as they learn and practice coding.
All of the interactions that the students have with Khanmigo are recorded and logged so parents and teachers can review them if need be. They're logged by date and time, and there is a built-in notification system that monitors the conversations for any questionable communication the student may initiate.
