Khan Academy

Khan Academy is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational organization offering online resources for youth and adult learners. Khan Academy was founded in 2008 by Sal Khan, who serves as CEO. The organization is headquartered in Mountain View, California. Khan Academy's stated mission is "to provide a free, world‑class education for anyone, anywhere."

Khan Academy offers online practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard for youth and adult learners to study at their own pace. Topics covered in the courses and resources include math, science, computing, history, art history, and economics, as well as test preparation content for the SAT, LSAT, and Praxis.

Khan Academy also offers coaching and teaching resources, including a teacher dashboard providing summaries of individual student and class performance. Its resources are translated into thirty-six languages, and there are Spanish, French, and Brazilian Portuguese versions of the site.

Khan Academy offers its resources for free to users instead of ads or subscriptions. It is supported by individual, corporate, and foundational contributions, including Bank of America, College Board, AT&T, Ann and John Doerr, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Google.org, Novartis, Fastly, General Motors, Adobe, Fundação Lemann, Carlos Rodriguez-Pastor, Tata Trusts, and Valhalla Charitable Foundation. Khan Academy acquired Duck Duck Moose, an educational mobile app company, in 2016.

In March 2023, Khan Academy announced it had created a research and development branch of the company, called Khan Labs. The first project of the lab was integrating artificial intelligence, specifically OpenAI's GPT-4, to create an educational chatbot. The chatbot is called Khanmigo and is intended to act as a virtual tutor for students to help with subjects such as math, computer science, and writing. The technology is also intended to act as an assistant to educators and support them by completing administrative tasks, such as developing lesson plans.

An explanation of Khan Academy's chatbot

In 2014, Khan Academy founded two brick-and-mortar schools—one in Mountain View, California, and the other in Palo Alto, California. The schools are called "Khan Lab School" and have courses for students from kindergarten through grade twelve. The classes are self-paced, and in addition to academics, the school focuses on other aspects of development for students, such as wellness and emotional intelligence.
