La La Land is a 2016 American musical film, written and directed by Damien Chazelle. It stars Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, John Legend, Rosemarie DeWitt, Finn Wittrock, and J. K. Simmons.
La La Land premiered at the Venice International Film Festival on August 31, 2016, and was released theatrically in the United States by Lionsgate on December 9, 2016. It grossed $448 million worldwide and received critical acclaim for the acting, Chazelle's direction and screenplay, the musical numbers, score, cinematography and production design.
At the 74th Golden Globes, the film won seven awards, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. It also won six awards at the 89th Academy Awards, including Best Actress for Stone, and Best Director for Chazelle, making him the youngest director to win the award.
