Lacuna Space is a satellite IoT provider run by the European Space Agency. Lacuna Space offers the Lacuna Network, which works off of Lacuna's cubesat constellation and offers an IoT network using sensors data to help track moving assets. The company says, because the network is operated from low-Earth orbit, it offers lower-cost tracking and detection service for short data message, no coverage blank-spots for moving assets, no need for device recharging or mains power, automatic connection between devices, and integration with other networks to find the best route for delivery of data.
The data and IoT network offered by Lacuna Space works to connect terrestrial networks to help users track moving assets, with battery-powered sensors capable of working for up to five years, and capable of passing data through the most economical and fastest route to connect to the network and maintain a stable connection to the network. The signals use a long-range wide area network protocol (LPWAN) that is designed to conserve battery power.
The satellites used on the network are low-cost cubesats, which are around the size of a shoebox, and fly in a 500km orbit that circles the Earth fourteen times a day. The satellites store the data messages for a short period of time, until they pass over a ground network or ground station operated or in cooperation with Lacuna Space. The data in turn are moved from the terrestrial network or ground station to Lacuna Space's cloud platform to allow users to view the data.
