Lev Landau

Lev Landau was a physicist, mathematician, inventor, and professor originally from the Russian Empire and later, the Soviet Union . He was born on January 22, 1908, in Baku, which is now in Azerbaijan . Landau died on April 1, 1968, in Moscow .

He received his education at the Ioffe Institute , Baku State University , and Baku Polytechnicum . Landau's doctoral advisor was Abram Ioffe .

Among his notable works were the Ginzburg–Landau theory, Landau pole, Landau damping, Landau theory, Landau distribution, Landau–Hopf theory of turbulence, Landau quantization, Landau–Pomeranchuk–Migdal effect, Landau–Zener formula, Landau–Lifshitz–Gilbert equation, Landau–Lifshitz model, Course of Theoretical Physics, Darrieus–Landau instability, and Landau–Yang theorem ].

Some of his doctoral students included Alexei Alexeyevich Abrikosov, Yakov Borisovich Zel'dovich, Isaak Markovich Khalatnikov, Isaak Pomeranchuk, Roald Sagdeev, Alexander Patashinski, Aleksander Akhiezer, and Ilya Lifshitz .

Lev Landau was awarded the 1962 Nobel Prize in Physics .
