Lev Landau was a physicist, mathematician, inventor, and professor originally from the Russian Empire and later, the Soviet Union . He was born on January 22, 1908, in Baku, which is now in Azerbaijan . Landau died on April 1, 1968, in Moscow .
He received his education at the Ioffe Institute , Baku State University , and Baku Polytechnicum . Landau's doctoral advisor was Abram Ioffe .

Some of his doctoral students included Alexei Alexeyevich Abrikosov, Yakov Borisovich Zel'dovich, Isaak Markovich Khalatnikov, Isaak Pomeranchuk, Roald Sagdeev, Alexander Patashinski, Aleksander Akhiezer, and Ilya Lifshitz .
Lev Landau was awarded the 1962 Nobel Prize in Physics .
