Luís of Portugal, Duke of Beja, was born on March 3, 1506, in Abrantes, Portugal. He was the second son of King Manuel I of Portugal and his second wife, Maria of Aragon, who was the third daughter of the Catholic Monarchs. Luís was a writer by occupation and participated in the Conquest of Tunis.
