M Stanley Whittingham

M. Stanley Whittingham a Distinguished Professor in Chemistry and Materials Science and Engineering at Binghamton University, New York. The research interests of Whittingham include materials chemistry and the preparation and chemical and physical properties of novel inorganic oxide materials, with a focus on finding new materials for advancing energy storage. His research group aims to improve storage ability of electrochemical devices used with renewable solar, wind energy and electrical vehicles. Whittingham leads a project looking to see what the ultimate limits of lithium-ion batteries are since as of 2019, only 25% of theoretical capacity is being used.

M. Stanley Whittingham along with John B. Goodenough and Akira Yoshino won the 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry “for the development of lithium-ion batteries”.
