Mamaearth is an India-based D2C personal care brand founded in 2016 by married couple Varun Alagh and Ghazal Alagh. The company's products are all-natural and free of toxic ingredients. Mamaearth is owned by parent company Honasa Consumer Limited.
The idea for Mamaearth originated after the founders had a baby in 2014. Varun and Ghazal had a difficult time finding safe, non-toxic baby products on the market in India. They soon grew tired of searching for safe products from other markets and decided to create their own brand. The couple launched Mamaearth in 2016. The company began by selling a small line of six baby care products. After two years, Mamaearth expanded into product categories like skin and hair care due to the demand for non-toxic products for mothers. As of 2023, those products account for 80 percent of Mamaearth's total sales. Mamaearth is Asia's first company to receive the MadeSafe certification in under four years. The MadeSafe certification verifies that a product is made with safe, non-toxic ingredients that cause no harm to the health of humans, animals, or the ecosystem.
Mamaearth reached unicorn status in December 2021 after a $52 million funding round led by Sequoia Capital. On October 31, 2023 Mamaearth's parent company, Honasa Consumer, launched an initial public offering (IPO) that concluded on November 2, 2023. The IPO raised a total of Rs 1,701.44 crore, equivalent to $204,300,408.
Mamaearth sells a wide range of personal care products for both babies and adults. The company sells products under the categories of hair, face, beauty, body, baby, and makeup. The ingredients in Mamaearth's products are sourced from certified non-genetically modified organism (GMO) suppliers. As of 2022, Mamaearth sells over 140 products. The company has served 5 million customers in 500 cities in India. Mamaearth's products are available for sale at over 30,000 points of sale in India, as well as online on its website, Amazon, Nykaa, and Flipkart. Mamaearth plants one tree for every purchase from its website and provides the image and geolocation of the tree to the customer.
