Mira Murati is an engineer who is a known leader in the development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology for companies such as Tesla and OpenAI. In November 2023, she was appointed interim chief executive officer (CEO) of OpenAI.
Murati was born in Albania and earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Tirana, where she studied computer science. She then went to the United States to study for her master’s degree in mechanical engineering at Dartmouth College and graduated in 2012.
After graduating with her master's degree, Murati worked in the aerospace industry and later began working at Tesla in 2013. While at Tesla, she was the product manager of the company's Model X car, which uses advanced technology such as AI.
In 2016, Murati joined augmented reality (AR) company Ultraleap (previously known as Leap Motion) as the vice president of product and engineering. Ultraleap is a California-based company specializing in the production of advanced hand-tracking devices.
Murati left Ultraleap and joined OpenAI in 2018, where she held the position of vice president of AI and partnerships. She was promoted to senior vice president of research, product, and partnerships in 2020 and was promoted again in 2022 when she became the chief technology officer (CTO) of OpenAI. Murati has worked on the development and launch of impactful AI products, such as ChatGPT and DALL-E. In a statement released by OpenAI, Murati has been described as being the leader of the company's research, product, and safety functions.
In November 2023, Murati was made interim chief executive officer (CEO) of OpenAI by the board of directors at the company. She was put into the position immediately after the previous CEO was removed by the board of directors.A few days later, Murati returned to her role as CTO when a different interim CEO was named by OpenAI.
In March 2023, Murati joined the board of directors for Unlearn.AI. The company leverages AI for medical research purposes and appointed Murati to the position due to her expertise in building and launching AI-based products.
