Tesla, Inc. is an American company that manufactures electric vehicles, batteries, and components; it is formerly known as Tesla Motors. Tesla was founded by Elon Musk and engineers Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning in 2003. Musk is the CEO and product architect of the company. Tesla vehicles and components are produced at its factory in Fremont, California. It is headquartered in Austin, Texas. Tesla also sells solar panels.
As of May 2021, Tesla has 2729 Superchargers worldwide. 1163 of those are in North America, with 1032 in operation.
Supercharger stations-related revenue (US$ in millions)
Since the Superchargers rely on local power, their operating costs are mostly linked to local electricity rates. In some cases, Tesla is also sharing those costs with local businesses that get traffic from having Tesla's stations in their parking lots.
The company stated that it is “only aiming to recover a portion of [their] costs and set up a fair system for everyone" and that the Supercharger network "will never be a profit center for Tesla.”
As part of Tesla's policy, Supercharger station users will be billed per kWh (kilowatt-hour), which varies in the US from state to state. Unused credits do not roll over to the next year; credits are reset to 400 kWh each year, on the anniversary of the delivery date. If the car transfers ownership, credits are reset on the date of the transfer. Tesla vehicles ordered after January 15, 2017, will receive roughly 400 kilowatt-hours of free Supercharging credits (about 1,000 miles) annually on the anniversary of their delivery.
