QuantumScape is a renewable energy company that is making solid-state battery technology for electric vehicles. QuantumScape is headquartered in San Francisco, California and was founded in 2010 by Fritz Prinz, Jagdeep Singh, and Tim Holme.
On September 3, 2020, QuantumScape announced an agreement to merge with the blank check special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) company Kensington Capital Acquisition Corp.
The company claims its solid-state batteries offer advantages over other battery products in terms of energy, fast charging, battery life, safety, and cost. Their solid-state batteries increase volumetric and gravimetric energy density by eliminating inefficient host materials such as graphite/silicon anodes; this feature also improves battery life and lowers costs because there is no capacity loss at the anode interface and less materials required for manufacturing.
The fast charging capabilities of solid-state batteries made by QuantumScape can achieve a 80% charge in under 15 minutes. The fast charging is made possible through the elimination of lithium diffusion. The company also claims its batteries are safer than traditional batteries because they do not have an organic separator; instead, it use a non-flammable and non-combustible solid-state separator.
