The idea of a studio-school was first expressed at a meeting of the leadership of the Moscow Art Theater on March 21, 1943. This was the last will of director and teacher Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko, who died of a heart attack. a month later, on April 25, 1943. The next day (April 26, 1943), a special resolution of the Council of People's Commissars of the RSF of Russia was immediately published, which contained a clause regarding the creation of a studio school.
Officially, the studio school was opened on October 20, 1943. The first rector was the theater director and critic Vasily Grigoryevich Sakhnovsky. The first class consisted of 27 students who graduated from school in 1947.
In the 1940s, there was only one faculty of drama theater and cinema actors. In 1987, a new department for theater artists was opened under the direction of Valery Yakovlevich Leventhal. In 1989, a new department of stage costume technologists was opened under the leadership of the People's Artist of Russia Eleonora Petrovna Maklakova. The Department of Lighting Artists was opened in 1988.
