NavalX serves as the innovation and agility cell for the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps. In this capacity, NavalX seeks to connect teams with tools, training, and resources, thereby enabling people to "think differently" and deliver more effective solutions to the U.S. military.
According to a May 2022 interview with the NavalX Director:
“Our objective to change the culture of the Navy to be more agile and innovative in its development, sustainment and acquisition approaches, is unwavering. We are evolving our tactics to meet the needs of our customers and continue our number one goal: guide stakeholders in delivering capability to the warfighter.”
The stated mission of NavalX is to the following:
- Guide naval stakeholders to rapidly deliver capabilities to the warfighter.
- Serve as the platform that connects naval needs and challenges with expert solution providers across industry, academia, and the Department of the Navy.
- Encourage and foster culture change across the Department of the Navy to make it a more agile, learning, and adaptable organization.
Launched in 2019 by the Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research, Development, and Acquisition, NavalX is staffed by both government civilians and military service members. Headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia, NavalX hosts offices in twenty-four locations throughout the world, categorized as Tech Bridges and Centers for Adaptive Warfighting.
NavalX Tech Bridges are "collaboration ecosystems" created to increase collaboration, knowledge sharing, and innovation between the Navy and other military services, commercial companies, and academia. Tech Bridges offer collaboration spaces in a commercial setting (rather than on a military base), thereby allowing easier access to a wider range of partners, including commercial companies, state and local government, and academic institutions.
