Nest, originally known as Nest Labs, was founded in May of 2010 by Tony Fadell and Matt Rogers, two former Apple engineers.
Nest's initial product is a smart programmable thermostat that hosted a wifi connection allowing consumers to adjust their home's temperature from smart devices anywhere. The thermostat collected user data to make predictions on best temperature practices based on historical settings. This product was introduced to the commercial market in 2011.
Nest Protect is a smart smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) detector, launched in October of 2013. The device is wifi-enabled, allowing push notifications to be sent to smart devices in the event of smoke or CO2 detection, as well as the ability to silence triggered alarms from smart devices. The item was discontinued in April of 2014 due to an affinity for the device's accidental disabling, which triggered a Nest Protect recall. In June of 2015, the product was relaunched with a split-spectrum sensor that allows smoke detection via light sensing.
Nest Cam was introduced to the Nest brand in June of 2015 after Nest acquired Dropcam in 2014. Nest released a full line of automated security cameras for indoor and outdoor home security. A software flaw was reported in 2016 that allowed anyone with a Bluetooth capable device to deactivate the security cameras; a security update was procured to secure camera networks.
Google announced on January 13, 2014, that it planned to acquire Nest Labs for $3.2 billion. The transaction was complete by January 14, 2014, with the intent of Nest continuing to operate independently from other Google businesses. Additionally, in 2014, Nest products became available for purchase in Europe.
In August of 2015, Google restructured its operations under the parent company Alphabet Inc. and Nest was separated from Google and became a subsidiary of Alphabet.
In February of 2018, Google hardware announced that Nest had merged to become part of the hardware division, which also served as home to Chromecast and Google Home. Nest remained at its headquarters located in Palo Alto, California, but the CEO, Marwan Fawaz, began directly reporting to the head of hardware Rick Osterloh. In June of 2018, Fawaz stepped down as CEO, and Nest was merged with Google's home devices team headed by Rishi Chandra. In 2019, Google rebranded all of its Google Home Hub products under the umbrella name Google Nest Hub.
