Nexmo was a communications platform as a service (CPaaS) company specializing in developing SMS and voice APIs. It was founded in 2010 and was located in San Francisco, California. The company raised more than $20,000,000 in funding over the course of four funding rounds. It is reported that Nexmo has more than 350 enterprise clients and processed five billion API calls yearly. Nexmo was acquired by Vonage, a company that develops communications solutions, in June of 2016 for a reported $230,000,000.
Nexmo specialized in developing cloud-based solutions for SMS and voice APIs using representational state transfer (REST) and short message peer-to-peer (SMPP) protocols. It is reported that Nexmo's platform was used by popular messaging platforms at the time of the company's existence to transmit SMS and voice calls across 200 countries. The platform was capable of being integrated into websites, mobile apps, and business systems.
The technology that had been developed by Nexmo is now available through the company that acquired it, Vonage. It is no longer described by the company's name as Nexmo is officially closed. The technology is now part of Vonage's SMS API feature that is available through its offerings.
