Outside.in was a New York City-based company that created an online platform for hyperlocal news to be shared among neighbors. It was backed by investors such as Union Square Ventures, Village Ventures, CNN, and Betaworks and raised funding through five rounds. It was acquired by AOL in 2011 for an undisclosed amount.
The company's platform collected data from local news sites, blogs, and discussion forums to update users to news happening specifically in their neighborhoods. It contained information for more than 50,000 neighborhoods in the United States.
Its product called Radar allowed for users to find out what was happening within 1,000 feet from their location. Users could also use a feature to get updates on happenings near locations they frequent, such as their place of employment or daily transportation hub. It also had a discussion forum feature, which allowed for users to post information about events in a specific area and also add a link to the event or place of business.
