SV Angel is an angel investment group based in San Francisco and was started by Ron Conway in 2009. The group provides seed funding to early-stage companies in the technology and software fields. In early 2011, SV Angel launched Start Fund as a joint venture with Yuri Milner. Start Fund provides convertible debt to companies participating in Y Combinator batches.
In March 2022, SV Angel raised its first growth equity fund of $269 million. This fund is in contrast to the firm's prior focus on seed-stage funding and its strategy to use special purpose vehicles for investing in late-stage companies. In 2018, the company pledged to stop raising funds from outside investors, although no institutional investors participated in the March 2022 round.
SV Angel primarily invests in the seed rounds of early-stage technology and software-focused companies in the United States. The group doesn't lead funding rounds. The average amount it awards to a company in the seed stage is $150,000. Unlike some investors, SV Angel does not take board seats from the companies it funds. Some of its many investments include Stripe, Reddit, Notion, Headspace, Color, Patreon, Credit Karma, Poshmark, and GitHub.
As of early 2022, SV Angel has had 405 reported investment exits, including the following:
