Notion Labs is a San Francisco-based software company offering a platform for writing, planning, and organizing note-taking. It was founded in 2016 by Chris Prucha, Ivan Zhao, Jessica Lam, and Simon Last. The company also offers workplaces for teams to collaborate, a workplace for wikis, and databases with an aim to be an all-in-one workspace for users and larger organizations.
Notion's original product offers users a workspace for generating notes and documents; it is developed to be simple to use and to be shared with other users. The notes can be organized using a table of contents, is capable of having code snippets and mathematical equations in the body of the document, can have videos and images embedded in the document, and offers toggles for collapsible sections to make documents easier to read. Notion offers various other content types to allow users to develop the document types they want. Users can collaborate with others through Docs and use comments to keep feedback and conversations on a document. The documents are developed to be searchable to allow users to find relevant information in documents and across documents.
Notion offers users a space to organize workspaces and centralize their knowledge in their Wikis. These offer a chance for collecting and organizing knowledge and documentation, which can be adapted to the needs of the users. This includes offering all files at a glance through a sidebar, a search function to find data and documents, drag-and-drop organizations, links to other pages, and syncing across organizations. The syncing can help users keep similar pieces of information up-to-date across various documents. Otherwise, the Wikis also offer various permissions and administrative controls for security and user management.
Notion is developed to allow users to manage projects through their platform, regardless of the team or project size. The platform allows users to view projects as a timeline to ensure things are working together and delivered on time while allowing users to observe and resolve dependencies and potential bottlenecks. All project details can be captured in tables, deadlines can be plotted in personal calendars, tracking can be done by priority labels, and team processes can be codified.
Notion has also developed a series of artificial intelligence (AI) features for its note-taking applications. These are developed to help users write and edit text, summarize key points in existing notes, and generate task lists. The integrated AI can write articles independently of the user, but the feature is considered by Notion to be a "thought partner" and not intended for that use. For example, it can help users improve text they have written and highlight text they want to be rewritten either for a different tone, simpler language, or to have a sentence padded out or cut down. In February 2023, Notion announced the AI was being offered to any using the company's platform, where previously it had been a paid service offering.
