SandboxAQ is an enterprise SaaS company that provides solutions related to AI and quantum computing, including cybersecurity and cryptography, quantum sensing, and simulation and optimization. SandboxAQ has plans to build commercial products for financial services, healthcare, telecommunications, the public sector, and other computationally-intensive industries.
SandboxAQ launched on March 11, 2022. The company was spun off from Alphabet Inc. with "nine figures" of funding, and several clients signed up for its cybersecurity services, including New York's Mount Sinai Health System and telecoms providers Vodafone Business and SoftBank Mobile. SandboxAQ AQ's CEO is Jack Hidary, who previously headed quantum computing research at Alphabet’s X lab. Other SandboxAQ team members also originated at Alphabet in 2016. Eric Schmidt is SandboxAQ’s chairman of the board.
Alphabet is not a shareholder in SandboxAQ, with Hidary stating he wanted outside investment to help speed growth. Initial investors in the company include Breyer Capital, Thomas Tull (former Founder & CEO of Legendary Entertainment), Guggenheim Investments, TIME Ventures, David Siegel (co-founder of Two Sigma), Bradley Bloom (cofounder and former managing director of Berkshire Partners), Section 32, Parkway Venture Capital, T. Rowe Price, and other leading funds. On February 15, 2023, SandboxAQ announced it had raised $500 million in funding. Participants included previous investors Breyer Capital, T. Rowe Price, TIME Ventures, and Eric Schmidt.
SandboxAQ's corporate headquarters are in Palo Alto, with locations in New York and Arlington, Virginia.
SandboxAQ Security Suite is an end-to-end, cryptographic-agility platform providing an inventory of existing cryptography use, including vulnerability and compliance analysis. The suite aims to protect against today’s attacks while securing against the future threat of a large-scale quantum computer. It offers a range of cryptographic management capabilities, including the following:
- Visibility, monitoring, and control of the company's cryptography
- Automatic analysis and reporting on cryptographic security postures
- Cryptographic policy management and enforcement
- Upgrades to new cryptographic protocols
- Compliance with cyber threats and requirements
SandboxAQ was selected by NIST's National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence for its Migration to Post-Quantum Cryptography project. The project partners with industry to help the government develop best practices for transitioning from current public-key cryptography to post-quantum cryptography algorithms. SandboxAQ has also formed strategic alliances with systems integrators Deloitte and EY to help enterprise customers securely transition to the quantum era.
SandboxAQ works with experts in AI + quantum technology (AQ) to develop quantum sensing applications. Quantum sensing leverages the inherent instability of quantum states to detect minute changes in the physical world, including motion, electric, and magnetic fields that would otherwise be undetectable. Combining these properties with AI, quantum sensing applications can be developed for a broad range of industries, including healthcare and navigation.
SandboxAQ uses classical hardware to combine fast and accurate quantum mechanical predictions with AI-driven insights. Simulation & optimization (S&O) merges quantum- and AI-based computational methods to make predictions guiding business decisions. SandboxAQ's S&O team relies on multiple technologies (tensor networks, quantum chemistry, generative modeling, NLP, and others) for applications that include developing new chemical compounds for accelerating drug discovery and materials science. The team runs quantum-inspired algorithms on distributed networks, including using novel chip architectures such as GPUs and TPUs.
