Secret (app)

Secret was a social media app that let users anonymously share information with friends and other connections on the platform. It was founded in August 2013 in the San Francisco Bay Area. The app was live for approximately sixteen months from 2013 until 2015, amassing a total of more than 15 million users. Secret was initially developed so users could give their genuine opinion on events happening in the community without fear of judgment. The app also had a private chat feature where users could connect and chat privately. It was reported that the app quickly turned into a venue for fear-mongering and bullying, specifically for the start-up community in Silicon Valley, and eventually became banned in Brazil.

The company behind the app had raised more than $35,000,000 over the course of several funding rounds from investors such as Index Ventures and Redpoint Ventures. The app was shut down in April of 2015. It was reported that the company returned money to investors who partook in funding rounds.
