Seymour Papert (February 29, 1928 – July 31, 2016) was a mathematician, computer scientist, and psychologist. Born in Pretoria, he held citizenship in both South Africa and the United States. Papert was educated at the University of the Witwatersrand, St John's College at the University of Cambridge, and the University of Geneva. His doctoral advisor was the renowned psychologist Jean Piaget.
Papert was the founder of the One Laptop per Child project, which aimed to provide low-cost laptops to children in the developing world. He was also instrumental in the development of Logo, a programming language for children. His other notable works include Lego Mindstorms, Mindstorms (the book), and Perceptrons (the book).
Throughout his career, Seymour Papert supervised various doctoral students, including Barbara M. White, David Perkins, Carl Hewitt, Benjamin Kuipers, Gerald Jay Sussman, Terry Winograd, Gary Drescher, Joel Moses, and Mitchel Resnick. Papert passed away on July 31, 2016 in Blue Hill, Maine.
