Shadow and Bone is a young adult fantasy novel by Leigh Bardugo and the first book in the Shadow and Bone trilogy. It has been featured on both the New York Times and Los Angeles Times Bestsellers lists. Shadow and Bone was published on June 5, 2012, by Henry Holt and Company. In April 2021, Shadow and Bone was adapted into a Netflix series. On June 6, 2022, a second season was announced.
The fictional nation of Ravka has been torn apart by the Shadow Fold, a swath of darkness that hides flesh-eating monsters. The fate of the nation is put in Alina Starkov's hands, a refugee whose regiment is attacked and best friend brutally injured on the Fold. She unveils a special underlying power that saves her friend, and may also be the key to freeing her country. Alina is taken to the royal court to become a member of the magical and secretive elite Grisha society, led by the mysterious Darkling. Alina must now use her new, untamed power to save her country while also dealing with the uncovered secrets of the Grisha.
Along with being both an NYT and LA Times Bestseller, Shadow and Bone has been listed as an Indie Next List Book. It made it onto the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) Best Fiction for Young Adults 2013 list, as well as the Amazon Best Books of the Month, June 2012 list.
Shadow and Bone is a trilogy. A prequel to the series is expected to be published in 2022. The books are listed by sequence of events in the series.
