SolidEnergy Systems is a technology manufacturing company making Li-Metal materials, cells, and packs for drones, consumer electronics and automotive applications that is headquartered in Woburn, Massachusetts and was founded in 2012 by Dr. Qichao Hu.
The company is making batteries for drones and space flight the company calls Hermes. Hermes batters are made to be lighter, safer, and more powerful than standard Li-ion cells, according to the companies website.
Athena batteries are the consumer electronic batteries made by SolidEnergy Systems. The batteries are made to be used in smartphones and wearable devices. The company claims on their website that Athena batteries are a third of the size of traditional smart phone and wearable technology batteries and can last twice as long on a single charge.
Apollo is the companies battery product made specifically for use in electric vehicles. The company claims their Apollo battery technology can offer vehicles twice the range of typical lithium-ion batteries used in electric cars, and can lower the cost of an electric vehicle by more than half.
On February 1, 2016 SolidEnergy Systems completed their series B funding round with $12 million in funding from a major US auto company, SAIC, Applied Ventures, and existing investors that participated in the companies series A funding round. The companies CEO and founder, Qichao Hu, made the following comment regarding the companies series B funding:
Strategic investments will help us build and ecosystem around our anode-free battery by establishing partnerships with equipment suppliers, battery manufactures and battery end users. We are humbled by the challenges and are very excited to play a role in the electrification of transportation and reduction of greenhouse gas emission worldwide.
On January 8, 2018 SolidEnergy Systems completed their series C funding round with $34 million in funding from undisclosed investors. At the time of announcing their series C funding, SolidEnergy Systems also announced appointing the former CEO of NEC Energy and president of A!@# Energy Solutions, Bud Collins, as the companies new COO. Qichao Hu made the following comment regarding the companies series C funding and appointment of But Collins:
We are grateful for the trust and support that our existing and new investors put in us and are thrilled to have a steady hand like Bud Collins at the operational helm as we continue to expand our product line and broaden our customer base. SolidEnergy plans to use the funds to expand our manufacturing capability both internally and through cell manufacturing partners.
