Thomas Straumann serves as a non-executive vice chairman of the board of directors of Straumann AG. He was trained in precision engineering and studied at Basel Management School and the Management & Commercial School of Baselland. He holds a honorary doctorate from the Medical Faculty of the University of Basel.
He is a member of the Human Resources & Compensation Committee at the Company. Straumann established the Institut Straumann AG in 1990 and was both CEO (–1994) and chairman (–2002). He is the founder, majority owner, and chairman of the medical device company Medartis AG. Sttraumann is the owner and a board member at the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois, Basel. He is also the chairman of the equestrian event company CSI-Basel AG.
Straumann owns a 17% stake in the publicly held Straumann Holding, a large manufacturer of dental implants. Straumann's grandfather Reinhard established the company in 1954 as an alloy research company specializing in the development of implants to treat bone fractures. Straumann's father Fritz introduced titanium dental implants in the 1970s. Thomas Straumann joined the company's board of directors in 1990 and shifted the company's focus to just dental products.
