VKontakte allows users to send messages to each other, create their own pages and communities, exchange images, audio and video recordings, transfer money, play browser games. It also positions itself as a platform for promoting business and solving everyday tasks with the help of mini-applications[4].
VKontakte is at the center of the so-called "ecosystem" of VKontakte, which is being developed by VK. "Ecosystem" unites projects: VKontakte social network, VK Pay payment service, VK Combo subscription, Delivery Club and Scooter services for ordering food and products, VK Mini Apps platform (VK Food mini apps, VK Dating, VKontakte Steps and others), voice assistant Marusya and others[5].
Launched on October 10, 2006, the resource initially positioned itself as a social network of students and graduates of Russian universities[6], later began to call itself "a modern, fast and aesthetic way of communicating online"[3]. In April 2022, the platform's daily audience in Russia amounted to 47.2 million. The monthly Russian audience was 73.4 million. 52% of Russian Internet users visit VKontakte every day. At the same time, the monthly coverage of the Runet reaches 84%[7]. The total monthly audience of VKontakte in all countries is 100 million users[8]. According to SimilarWeb data from January 1, 2021, the VKontakte website ranked 15th in popularity in the world[9].
The headquarters of VKontakte is located in the historic building of St. Petersburg - the House of the Singer company. The top five floors are occupied by the VKontakte team, the bottom two are occupied by the famous bookstore "House of Books"[3]. The company also has offices in the building of the Au Pont Rouge department store ("At the Red Bridge") in St. Petersburg[10], in the Skylight towers in Moscow and the Sirius educational center in Sochi. Until June 2017, VKontakte had a representative office in Kiev[11].
From February 2017 to March 2021, Andrey Rogozov was the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of VKontakte[12]. Since April 2021, the CEO of VKontakte has been Marina Krasnova, who was previously the product director of VKontakte[13].
VK, which was known as Mail.ru Group until 12 October 2021, is a Russian internet company. It was started in 1998 as an e-mail service and went on to become a major corporate figure in the Russian-speaking segment of the Internet. As of 2013 according to comscore, websites owned by VK collectively had the largest audience in Russia and captured the most screen time.
