In 2002, after a long break — in 1988, the army Iltis was discontinued — an SUV appeared in the Volkswagen model range. Touareg was developed jointly by three German brands, other cars created on the same PL71 platform were Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne.
Volkswagen Touareg had a solid interior, like a business class sedan, and rich equipment. At the same time, the car was not deprived of off-road capabilities: permanent all-wheel drive with downshift and differential locks, optional air suspension, which allowed changing the ground clearance in the range of 160-300 mm.
Gasoline engines V6 3.2 (220-241 hp) and V8 4.2 (306 hp) were installed on the car, but in 2004, instead of the previous "six", a new one appeared, with a volume of 3.6 liters and a capacity of 276 "horses". There were three turbodiesels — a five-cylinder 2.5-liter, V6 3.0 and V10 5.0, their output was from 174 to 350 hp. The Tuaregs were equipped with a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed Aisin automatic.
A special position in the model range was occupied by a small-scale version of the Volkswagen Touareg W12 model of 2005. She had a twelve-cylinder gasoline engine with a volume of six liters and a capacity of 450 hp under the hood. Up to "hundreds" such an SUV was able to accelerate in 5.9 seconds.
In 2007, the model was restyled. The updated Tuareg received a different design, a slightly redesigned interior and a wider choice of options. At the same time, the old V8 4.2 petrol engine was replaced by a new FSI series engine of the same volume, developing 350 forces. Restyled SUVs with gasoline engines were equipped only with automatic transmissions.
The second generation of the Volkswagen Touareg crossover debuted in 2010. Large-node assembly of machines for the Russian market was organized at the plant in Kaluga.
The car was equipped with gasoline atmospheric engines V6 3.6 (249 hp in the specification for our market) and V8 4.2 (360 hp), as well as diesel engines V6 3.0 and V8 4.2 with a capacity of 204-340 hp And there was also a hybrid version in the model range.
All versions have all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic, and for an additional fee, a 4XMOTION package with a package of off-road options was offered (increased ground clearance, downshift, center differential with the possibility of forced locking and locking of the rear differential, fuel tank increased to 100 liters of volume).
In 2014, the production of crossovers with an updated design began. At the same time, cars for the European market were brought to the Euro-6 standard using SCR filters with AdBlue urea injection, but Volkswagen Touareg for Russia retained the previous engines.
In 2015, Russian sales of versions with eight-cylinder engines and with a hybrid powerplant ended, and in 2017, the assembly of cars in Kaluga stopped. In Slovakia, the "Tuareg" of the third generation was made until 2018.
Volkswagen Touareg is a large luxury crossover, the third generation of which has been produced in Slovakia since 2018.
Cars for Russia are equipped with three-liter turbodiesels. All versions have all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission. Deliveries of petrol versions 2.0 TFSI and 3.0 TFSI to Russia have been discontinued.
With the change of generations, the Volkswagen Touareg lost the downshift and the rear differential lock (they were offered for an additional fee), and instead of a transmission with a mechanical central differential, it received a multi-disc clutch, like most modern "SUV".
