X-energy is an advanced nuclear reactor design and tristructural-isotropic (TRISO) based fuel fabrication company. Their objective is to incorporate innovative design features with the goal of building a game-changing, small-scale nuclear energy source that can be adapted to a variety of markets. X-energy reactors aim to be a disruptive technology in the global power-generating market as it produces zero emissions, allows for size flexibility, can serve nontraditional markets, and is economically attractive.
X-energy's Xe-100 reactor concept is a 200MWt (75MWe) high-temperature gas-cooled pebble-bed nuclear reactor, that requires less time to construct, uses factory-produced components, and is meltdown-proof compared to conventional nuclear designs. X-energy is also producing TRISO-based fuel forms with pilot-scale manufacturing capacities that began in 2018.
They are focused on marketing their technology to the U.S. military and commercial markets around the world.
X-energy was founded in 2009 by Dr. Kam Ghaffarian to innovative and implement energy solutions that are clean, safe, secure and affordable. The company is based in Rockville, Maryland. In January 2019, J. Clay Sell was appointed CEO of X-Energy, a former deputy secretary of the US Department of Energy (2005-2008) and Special Advisor to President George W. Bush (2003-2005).
The company is supported by $38.5M in private investment and was awarded a five-year $53M U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Advanced Reactor Concept Cooperative Agreement award in 2016. In 2018 X-energy received a further $8.99M cooperative agreement from the DOE to develop its TRISO-X Fuel Facility, a cross-cutting, high assay low enriched uranium (HALEU) fuel fabrication facility.
