AWS HealthScribe is a healthcare technology service that was released by Amazon Web Services in July 2023 for use in the eastern part of the United States. It uses generative artificial intelligence (AI) to automatically create clinical documentation from patient-clinician conversations. The service is part of Amazon Bedrock, a hub developed by Amazon for building and scaling generative AI applications with foundation models.
AWS HealthScribe is intended to be used by large healthcare organizations and healthcare software providers to develop clinical applications using technology, such as speech recognition, natural language processing (NLP), and generative AI, to streamline the process of creating some medical documentation. It can be used for conversations that take place in English and in contexts for general medicine and orthopedics.
AWS HealthScribe can transcribe verbal conversations between a medical professional and a patient. The transcriptions can be made into summaries that are included in the electronic health record (EHR) of the patient and the system in which it exists. The summaries can contain information such as the reason for the visit, a brief history of the patient's experience of the illness, an assessment, and a follow-up plan.
AWS HealthScribe can be used to:
- generate clinical notes
- assist medical scribes
- create summaries of the patients' visits
- identify key details, such as medical terminology and medications
Several major companies have integrated or plan to integrate AWS HealthScribe into their solutions or offerings. For example, 3M and Babylon Health have integrated the service into their offerings to increase efficiency for their healthcare offerings.
