Aiven is a company offering a managed open-source and multi-cloud data platform for businesses. With Aiven's services, businesses can easily access different features through one cloud platform without having to create their own software infrastructure. Aiven was founded in 2016 by Oskari Saarenmaa, Hannu Valtonen, Heikki Nousiainen, and Mika Eloranta.
Founders Saarenmaa, Valtonen, and Eloranta met while working at F-Secure. The trio left the company in 2015 to work on founding what would become Aiven; they were joined by Saarenmaa's childhood friend, Nousiainen. Aiven was officially launched in 2016 via Twitter, which is where the company found its first customer: a trucking company from Mexico. Aiven started out without any external investors; its first investment did not come until 2017. Aiven originally planned to market its services to just software companies, thinking businesses in that industry would make up the majority of its customers. Shortly after launching, Aiven was met with interest by well-established businesses in the retail industry. Its success among these other businesses led to its expanded marketing, which has helped attract customers from countries across the world.
Aiven is available to use on ten open source services: Apache Kafka, Apache Cassandra, Apache Flink Beta, PostgreSQL, Redis, OpenSearch, MySQL, InfluxDB, M3, and Grafana. Aiven's platform provides unlimited scalability, end-to-end encryption, and full compliance certifications. Services on Aiven can be deployed in as little as ten minutes. Pricing is subscription-based and dependent on the service used with Aiven, as well as the business's needs.
Partners of Aiven include Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, UpCloud, Navisite, and Hasura. Aiven delegates its partners into four categories: cloud platform partners, resource partners, technology partners, and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) partners.
Aiven is used by companies in many industries. Commerce company Wolt uses Aiven for Apache Kafka, OpenSearch, and Grafana to complete transactions and provide logistics. Comcast uses several Aiven services to run Xfinity Home, which requires low latency at a massive scale. GoTo Financial uses Aiven for Apache Kafka to manage its GoPayLater app.
