Andrew Chen is an investor and general partner at Andreessen Horowitz (a16z).
Chen attended the University of Washington, where he graduated with a bachelor of science in applied mathematics.
In 2009, Chen founded a start-up that remained in stealth mode throughout its existence. It raised seed and series A funding rounds from the Horowitz Andreessen Angel Fund, Mitch Kapor, Index Ventures, Ignition Partners, and Tom Bedecarre of WPP Ventures. In 2014, the stealth start-up team soft-landed at Uber after launching consumer apps that garnered tens of millions of active users through AOL, Facebook, and Android. Chen started leading Uber's Rider Growth product teams in 2015. In May 2018, Chen began working as a general partner at a16z. He helped raise Games Fund One, a $660 million fund focused on investing in video game studios and artificial intelligence (AI) platforms. Chen is the author of The Cold Start Problem: How to Start and Scale Network Effects (2021).
Chen has invested in companies including Practice, StartPlaying, Bounce, Ramen VR, Pietra, Sandbox VR, Snackpass, Polymer, Hipcamp, Substack, and Envoy.
