Barry Silbert is an entrepreneur, investor, founder and former CEO and Chairman of SecondMarket, founder and CEO of Digital Currency Group (DCG), founder of Bitcoin Investment Trust (BIT), and founder of Grayscale Investments. Silbert holds a bachelor's degree in finance from Emory University's Goizueta Business School and is based in New York.
In 2008, Silbert founded SecondMarket, Inc., a venture-backed financial platform technology company. He served as CEO until 2014 and Chairman until 2015, when SecondMarket was acquired by Nasdaq, Inc. In 2015, Silbert founded Digital Currency Group, where he serves as CEO. DCG is an active seed investor in companies in the digital currency, blockchain technology, and global financial services sectors, including BitGo, BitPay, BitPagos, BitPesa, Chain, Chainalysis, Circle, Coinbase, Gyft, Kraken, Ripple Labs, TradeBlock, Unocoin, and Xapo. Additionally, in 2013 Silbert founded the Bitcoin Investment Trust (BIT), a private, open-ended trust with publicly quoted securities (ticker: GBTC) solely invested in and deriving value from the price of bitcoin, sponsored by Grayscale Investments, a DCG company.
Silbert has personally invested in 500 Global, Artsy, Coinsetter, Endurance Lending Network, Lenddo, Lua, SecondMarket, SendTheTrend, Slated, SponsorHub, Tapad, TraceLink, Voyat, OneName, TradeBlock, Ripio, Rewind Me, IVY and Murfie. His notable exits include Voyat, TradeBlock, Tapad, SponsorHub, Lua, and Endurance Lending Network.
In 2011, Barry Silbert was named "Entrepreneur of the Year " by Ernst & Young, "Entrepreneur of the Year " by Crain's, and was listed on Fortune's "40 Under 40" list.
