Celestia is a blockchain company developing a layer-1 blockchain network to aid developers in deploying new blockchains. It orders transactions and verifies the availability of published data. The company was founded in 2019 under the name LazyLedger and changed its name to Celestia in 2021. The founders of the company are Mustafa Al-Bassam (who also cofounded Chainspace) and Ismail Khoffi.
Celestia is a blockchain architecture that allows developers to utilize it as an on-demand consensus network for launching their own blockchain. Celestia is designed so blockchains being developed specifically for hosting applications can deploy on top of it. The stated goal of Celestia is to achieve scalability, flexibility, and interoperability for its users.
The testnet version of Celestia, Mamaki, was launched in May 2022. It allows users to operate nodes, receive tokens for the testnet, delegate from validators, and send transactions between wallets. The team behind Celestia has stated that it intends to launch its incentivized testnet followed by its mainnet in 2023. A token is slated to be launched in the same year.
