Charles III, Duke of Lorraine , was a French monarch and the Duke of Lorraine from 1545 until his death . Born on February 18, 1543, in Nancy, France , Charles III was the eldest surviving son of Francis I, Duke of Lorraine, and Christina of Denmark . Known by the nickname "the Great", he held French citizenship .
During his reign, Charles III founded the University of Lorraine . He passed away on May 14, 1608, in Nancy, France .
