Citymapper is a transportation app for cities. HeadQuartered in London, the company is venture capital-backed by Index Ventures, Benchmark Capital, Balderton Capital, Connect Ventures, and different angels.
Citymapper incorporated dockless bike and scooter options into its maps and also shared its data with municipalities in order to enhance city bus routes. Additionally, the company launched its own bus and taxi ride-sharing solution in London, using its data, to optimize transport along a fixed route through the city. As a whole, these solutions aim to address the issues of urban congestion.
The company's app provides transportation options for different cities around the world, like London, New York City, Moscow Boston, Seattle, Paris, Berlin, Hong Kong, and Melbourne. In 2014, Citymapper raised a $10 million series A round led by Balderton Capital and a $40 million series B round led by Index Ventures and Balderton in 2016. At the time of the series B, the company was valued at around $325 million.
In 2021, Citymapper opened itself up to retail investors, launching a crowdfunding campaign in a bid to raise money to fund its expansion into major cities in the world. In 2019, the mapping app recorded a loss of nearly £9 million on revenues of £5.8 million.
