Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited, known as CATL, is a technology company that manufactures lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles, as well as energy storage systems. The company is headquartered in Ningde, China, and was founded in 2011 by Zeng Yuqun. Zeng had previously served as president at Amperex Technology Limited (ATL), a lithium-ion battery company focused on consumer electronics. The company has publicly stated it aims to have 50 GWh worth of energy storage systems in production capacity by 2020. CATL customers include car manufacturers BMW, Volkswagen, Daimler, Nissan and Renault.
On October 1, 2016 Contemporary Amperex Technology completed their series b funding round with an undisclosed amount of funding from undisclosed investors. At the time of receiving series B funding the company was worth approximately $11.5 billion.
CATL made an initial public offering in June 2018, following approval from the Chinese securities regulator. In its investment prospectus, the company claims to be the largest electric vehicle battery manufacturer in the world.
