EcoFactor is a cloud-based home energy management platform providing services to utilities and home service providers. The company was founded in 2006, and raised about $31 million USD in funding before being purchased by Trane on June 9, 2019.
Trane purchased the company with the goal of incorporating their AI technology into their existing Nexia smart thermostat, which had received mixed reviews. EcoFactor technology has been added to Trane's HVAC systems in order to keep home utilities more efficient and homes more comfortable for consumers.
Although EcoFactor was purchased and integrated into the Trane network, the company is still maintained and provides its own HVAC performance monitoring (HPM) platform, which includes customer management tools, partner infrastructure integrations, and an open API that allows it to work with any thermostat.
The company also continues to file patents under the trademark, with the most recent coming in December 2020. EcoFactor sued Google in late 2019 for infringing on four patents, which they say were used in the Google's Nest product.
