Federated Wireless deploys and manages new 5G private wireless networks through shared spectrum solutions. The company was founded in 2012 by Jeffrey H. Reed, Charles Clancy, Robert McGwier, and Joseph Mitola. Federated offers fixed wireless shared spectrum LTE solutions and serves rural and suburban markets where traditional solutions aren't cost effective.
Federated Wireless' spectrum uses the Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) at the 3.5 GHz band and is part of the CBRS Alliance. The alliance grants opportunities for WISPs to invest in network upgrades that expand the availability of reliable fixed broadband service.
The provider promises on its site to never sell data or compete with broadband subscribers, and offers fixed wireless link prices. Federated Wireless's Fixed Wireless plan is available in one- and three-year subscriptions; the company's start-up package costs $499 and includes:
- One "Mastering CBRS" online course
- Access to the company's operations team
- Unlimited access to the My Federated online customer portal
- Fixed wireless link prices at $2.25 per month
The shared spectrum used by Federated Wireless offers high resolution LiDAR capabilities, allowing 3D mapping results with up to one-meter resolution over an eight-mile radius. Federated Wireless also provides a heatmap GUI, which allows network coverage analysis and can be used to determine ideal latitude, longitude, and height for services.
Federated Wireless was one of four companies named as members by the Wireless Innovation Forum in 2013, in addition to Google, Nordia Soft, and the Idaho National Laboratory.
The company has also received funding from the US Department of Defense in 2020 as part of a $600 million 5G experimentation project; specifically, the DoD's 5G-enabled Smart Warehouse project has been researched at Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany, Georgia. The project is intended to increase the efficiency and fidelity of MCLB Albany logistic operations, which include identification, recording, organization, storage, retrieval, and inventory control of supplies. Federated Wireless will also work with the DoD to develop proving grounds for testing, refining, and validating 5G-enabled technologies.
The FCC-approved Federated Wireless expanded SAS operations into the CBRS portion of the 3.5 GHz band on May 7, 2020, allowing the company to operate in American Samoa.
Federated Wireless President and CEO Iyad Tarazi is listed among the top 5G influential leaders in the industry, alongside executives from Qualcomm, Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung, and Microsoft.
