Forbes was founded in 1917 by Bertie Charles (B.C.) Forbes, a Scottish immigrant and financial writer. The magazine struggled through the great depression. Malcom Forbes, B.C.'s son, joined the publication in 1945 and began to hire full-time writers and editors (previously Forbes was written by freelance writers).In 1961, James Micheals became an editor at Forbes, and became known for his "hard-hitting stories." Micheals remained with Forbes until 1999.
Forbes introduced its first special annual issue that ranked the 400 richest Americans in 1982 called "Forbes Richest 400" and referred to as "The Rich List".This list was the inspiration for other Forbes lists such as Forbes’ "30 Under 30." Forbes launched its website in 1996. Forbes Magazine launched the social networking app called "Stream" in 2014, in partnership with the app creation company Maz. The app gives readers access and the ability to share and save content from Forbes magazine and Forbes.com
