IonQ is a quantum computing company developing hardware based on ion trap architecture. Founded in 2015 by Chris Monroe and Jungsang Kim with $2 million in seed funding from New Enterprise Associates. IonQ raised an additional $20 million from GV, Amazon Web Services, and NEA in 2017.
At the 2017 IEEE International Conference on Rebooting Computing, IonQ presented a paper titled "Reconfigurable and Programmable Ion Trap Quantum Computer ". It outlines the construction and operation of IonQ's room- temperature quantum computer built with trapped atomic ion qubits.
In 2019, IonQ partnered with Microsoft and Amazon Web Services to make their quantum computers available via the cloud, as well as leading companies starting to use IonQ systems for real-world problems in chemistry, medicine, finance, logistics, and more.
Research by IonQ has been published in numerous scientific journals including Nature.
