Established in March of 2023, Latitude AI is a wholly owned subsidiary of Ford Motor Company. Latitude AI was established to focus on the development of automated driving technologies, with a special early focus on Level 3 automation capabilities. This includes an eyes-off, hands-off system for passenger vehicles.
The establishment of Latitude AI came after Argo AI, a joint venture between Volkswagen and Ford Motor Company and with a focus on Level 4 and Level 5 autonomy—particularly in the realm of automated fleet vehicles and robotaxis—was wound down by both parties. This came as Level 4 and Level 5 automation was seen to be too far away to make Argo AI profitable in the near term. With the establishment of Latitude AI, Ford Motor Company hired approximately 550 former Argo AI employees.
Latitude AI is headquartered in Pittsburgh, with additional engineering sites in Dearborn, Michigan, and Palo Alto, California. The efforts of Latitude AI will initially be put toward Ford's BlueCruise technology, which offers Level 2 capabilities. Upgrading the system to a Level 3 capable automation system would improve safety while allowing drivers to take their eyes and hands off the road. It would also work to bring Ford Motor Company closer to a number of other automakers, including Mercedes-Benz and Honda, who have developed and deployed similar systems.
