OpenBazaar is an open source decentralized marketplace that officially launched in April 2016 and is run by OB1. The platform allows users to make e-commerce transactions in a decentralized manner without transactions fees using cryptocurrencies as a medium of exchange.
The open source project began at a hackathon in Toronto, Canada in 2014 when Amir Taaki and his team of developers came up with the initial proof of concept for an online decentralized marketplace, called 'Dark Market', that would later become known as OpenBazaar.
On June 11, 2015 OpenBazaar completed a seed funding round raising $1 million in funding from Union Square Ventures, Adreessen Horowitz, and William Mougayar.
On March 13, 2018 OpenBazaar announced they have completed their series A funding round raising $5 million in funding from OMERS Ventures, Bitmain, Union Square Ventures, BlueYard Capital, Digital Currency Group, William Mougayar, and Andreessen Horowitz.
